Testing for RF signals

Testing for RF signals with a bug detection device

If you have the detection sensitivity turned up all the way it will go off all the time. The average household has multiple items that transmit using RF. Try this:

 

·        Turn the unit down to the lowest sensitivity setting, the LED lights should stop blinking

·        Pick up your cordless phone but keep the RF detector about 3 feet away

·        On  your phone press whatever buttons you need to get a dial tone (or start dialing)

·        Move the RF detector unit right next to the phone

·        It will detect the RF signal and the LED lights will go off

 

You should be able to do that with a cell phone too.

 

You have to “sweep” your rooms a couple of times using the low settings. You are looking for RF signals in places where they don’t belong… shower heads, light fixtures, electrical outlets etc.

Options for recording through a window

Every week I get a call from customers who need to place a video camera in a window. Its actually a tricky situation… most hidden cameras are built into appliances etc. But you need something small enough that it doesn’t attract too much attention in a window.

 

The other challenge is the motion activation. Using PIR is out because it won’t work too well through glass. So the long battery life cameras are out!

Quick Start Guide for Mini Clock Deluxe:

1. Take off the back panel
2. Power up the unit by connecting it to a PC via USB cable (8 hours)
3. Disconnect USB
4. Insert SD card into slot next to USB connection
5. Switch on/off button to the on position
6. Press the red power button on the remote (this activates the camera and puts it in standby awaiting your instructions about how you want to record). Don’t rush, give the camera a few seconds to get going.
7. Note: The blue power light is on an angle so it isn’t obvious. To see it you have to look down at the camera from the right on a 45 degree angle).
8. Press the button on the remote that shows a person in front of a camera to start motion activated recording. Don’t rush give the camera a few seconds to get going.
9. Let the camera run in motion activated mode for a few minutes.
10. Press the red power button on the remote to save the files and stop motion activated recording.
11. Turn the on/off button to the off position to complete shutdown and file saving
12. Connect to your PC via USB cable
13. Turn the on/off switch to the on position
14. Press the power button on the remote to start the unit.
15. In Windows the device should show up as a removable storage device.
16. Navigate to the folder containing the video.
17. Double click the video file and the video should start to play

Recording in low light either requires infra red light or high quality lenses. We have 2 infra red items but they are not disguised. I would call them "discrete".
